A science teacher who pretended to be a teenage girl on the internet has been jailed for four years after admitting having sex with a 13-year-old girl.

Manchester crown court heard how Matthew Knott, who taught at Elton High Street School in Bury, created a fake online profile of a 15-year-old girl called Jessica.

Hr then met his victim online and a week later took her to his flat and told her to have sex with him.

The 24-year-old had sent the teenage girl a series of explicit messages and requested naked photos.

The court heard his victim was not a student at the school at which he taught.

He was jailed for four years on Wednesday after earlier pleading guilty to grooming a child for sex on the internet and sexual activity with a child.

Sentencing him, Judge Michael Henshaw said: "It is perfectly clear to anybody here and those reading about these offences to see these were carefully planned calculated offences carried out in a devious way to enable you to meet this child for the purpose of having sex with her.

"The type of activity you engaged in is of enormous public concern. Parents throughout this country are no doubt worried sick what their offspring might be doing when they are using the computer.

"There are people like you who adopt identities to encourage children to commit offences."

Knott has also been banned from working with children for five years.
