Giggs scored his 150th goal for Manchester United with his equaliserGoals from Ryan Giggs and Michael Carrick saw Manchester United come from behind to beat Wolfsburg 2-1 at a rain-soaked Old Trafford.

Wolfsburg arrived in Manchester to play their first away game in the Champions League and looked dangerous in attack with adventurous full-backs and prolific strikers Grafite and Edin Dzeko.

The Bosnian Dzeko put them into the lead at the beginning of the second half, however, Giggs equalised with his 150th goal for Manchester United before Carrick curled in the winner.

Ferguson made five changes from the team that beat Stoke at the weekend, with Tomasz Kuszczak replacing Ben Foster and Michael Owen starting his first Champions League game for United. However Owen had little chance to impress the watching Fabio Capello as he was forced off through injury after the opening 20 minutes which was dominated by Wolfsburg.

They were presented with the first opportunity when Nemanja Vidic headed a poor clearance to Dzeko. The Bosnian teed up Christian Genter for a shot on the edge of the box but it was straight at Kuszczak.

The German champions continued to show there attacking credentials as Marcel Schafer flashed a cross into the box which was just behind Grafite before Patrice Evra misplaced a pass which fell for Dzeko who shot wide.

Rooney and little of the ball in the opening 20 minutes but when Anderson was fouled he stepped up to curl a dipping free-kick a yard wide before Owen was replaced by Dimitar Berbatov.

The Bulgarian had an immediate impact, setting up chances for Antonio Valencia who shot wide and Carrick whose effort was well saved by Benaglio.

United continued to look threatening as half-time approached with Berbatov smashing Giggs’ cross over the bar from a tight angle before Valencia crossed for Carrick whose diving header was easily saved by Benaglio.

Anderson forced a good save from Benaglio after the break as United passed the ball around confidently, however it was the German visitors who took the lead through Dzeko’s header. Zvjezdan Misimovic clipped the ball in from the left for the tall Bosnian to rise above Evra at the back post and power the ball past Kuszczak.

United were behind for less than five minutes though thanks to Ryan Giggs’ deflected free-kick which evaded the dive of the flat footed Benaglio.

Ferguson’s team continued to push for a winner and were rewarded when Carrick curled in from the left of the box. Berbatov had attemped to lay off the ball to Giggs, but the ball was just too far in front of the Welshman who had the presence of mind to tee up Carrick to put United into the lead.

Wolfsburg rallied in the final minutes and Evra made a vital interception to deny Dzeko another heading opportunity and secure a hard fought win.ADNFCR-708-ID-19387330-ADNFCR
